How to write better ads using AI - Beginner

Whether you’re running Google, Meta, TikTok ads, etc., AI can help you generate headlines, descriptions, and calls to action that optimize conversion rates.

In our data-dominated world, ads are usually treated as a second thought. But compelling ad copy can make the difference between a campaign that converts and one that falls flat.

Fortunately, AI has made it easier than ever for us to craft high-performing ad copy with minimal effort.

Whether you’re running Google, Meta, TikTok ads, etc., AI can help you generate headlines, descriptions, and calls to action that optimize conversion rates.

Getting Started with AI for Ad Copy

I know you're already familiar with all the major tools, so we won’t waste time listing them all. For this guide I'll focus on simply using ChatGPT and Claude—both are great options, and for now, it’s outside the scope of this article to debate which is better. Either one works fine.

Instead of focusing on tools, this article is about having a structured approach to creating ad copy with AI. This means going beyond simply generating text and instead using AI strategically to get the best results. Future articles will cover more advanced techniques, but for now, let’s start with the basics of structuring AI-generated ad copy effectively.

How to Use AI to Write Simple Ad Headlines and Descriptions

AI tools work best when given clear instructions. To generate effective ad copy, follow these steps:

  1. Define Your Objective – Is your ad designed to drive traffic, generate leads, or boost sales? Your AI-generated text should align with this goal.

  2. Provide Key Details – AI performs best with context. Include the product name, unique selling points, and any specific keywords you want to use.

  3. Use a Strong Prompt – Instead of asking AI to “write an ad,” provide a structured prompt:

    • “Generate five Google ad headlines for a luxury skincare brand that highlight anti-aging benefits.”

    • “Create a Facebook ad description for a 50% off spring sale on running shoes.”

  4. Review and Refine – AI-generated text isn’t always perfect. Edit and tweak the copy to match your brand’s tone and message.

Best Practices for AI-Generated Ad Copy

  • Keep It Clear and Concise – Google and Meta ads have character limits, so ensure your AI-generated text is punchy and to the point.

  • Focus on Benefits, Not Just Features – Instead of “Our sneakers use high-tech foam soles,” try “Experience all-day comfort with our ultra-light foam sneakers.”

  • Use Action Verbs – AI can suggest strong calls to action like “Shop Now,” “Get Started,” or “Claim Your Offer.”

  • A/B Test Variations – Generate multiple ad variations with AI and test them to see which performs best.

  • Include Examples – AI works best when given reference material. If you have successful past ads or competitor examples, include them in your prompt to guide the AI toward better results.

Prompt Template

Use this template to structure your AI-generated ad copy effectively:

“Generate five Google ad headlines for [product/service] that highlight [main benefit or unique feature].”

“Create a Meta ad description for [promotion/offer], emphasizing [value proposition].”
